Whipple Scrip Tokens

Coal scrip tokens issued by The New River Company, White Oak Coal Company in various West Virginia locations, including the locales of Whipple, Cranberry, Kilsyth, Oswald, Price Hill, Stanaford, Harvey and others.

Appalachian coal mining companies paid their workers in company scrip, which was redeemable only at company stores owned by those companies. Although scrip was used mainly during the 1800's, the practice continued in certain places in Kentucky and West Virginia until it was outlawed by Congress in 1967.

The Whipple Company Store) in Whipple (near Scarbro), West Virginia was one of the company stores.
