Plaque describing the Whipple Truss Bridge

The Whipple Truss Bridge was designed and patented by Squire Whipple and his nephew John Major Whipple. The bridge shown above was originally built by John (partner to Squire 1850-1860) over the Sugar River north of Boonville, NY. (Photo courtesy of Russ Roberts.) John "obtained a large number of contracts for bridge construction across the state. He was named Supt. of Black River Canal in 1879." (Source: E-mail from Paul Ward (avila19@nycap.rr.com) 1 Jun 2005, citing James Pitcher, the Boonville Town Historian.)

Squire's Whipple Truss Bridge at Union College in Schenectady, NY, is a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. (Squire graduated from Union College.)

Blaine Whipple's article on Squire Whipple appears on this site. Squire and his nephew, John Major Whipple, both appear in the Whipple Genweb.
