In 1859, at the age of 37, Henry B. Whipple was elected the first Bishop of Minnesota. The Indians in Minnesota called him "Straight Tongue" for his honesty and outspokenness. To others he was known as the Apostle to the Indians. Bishop Whipple's calling card (which reads "The Bishop of Minnesota") appears beneath his photograph.
