Bishop Henry Benjamin Whipple was born in Jefferson County New York, February 15, 1822. He was the son of John H. Whipple and the grandson of Benjamin Whipple who served in the Revolutionary War and was a prisoner on the British ship Jersey. He was the nephew of the Rev. George Whipple D.D. who secured him a place at Oberlin College.
