William Whipple Medal

Another medal for William Whipple signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire. On the front: "William Whipple of New Hampshire." On the reverse: "The unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America, July 4th 1776."

Also mentioned on the reverse is "Saratoga." It was on September 27, 1777, that "Brigadier General William Whipple commenced his duty in command of the New Hampshire Troops in the Vermont and New York campaigns, which ended with the Battle of Saratoga, the turning point of the American Revolution. This maried the surrender of Burgoyne, and General Whipple and Colonel Wilkinson were chosen by General Schuyler to present the Britisn General with the terms of surrender." -- from "This Was a Man: A Biography of General William Whipple" by Dorothy Mansfield Vaughan.
