Fort Whipple, Prescott AZ

Prescott, Arizona's Fort Whipple was named after Amiel Weeks Whipple (1817-1863) a Major General in the U.S. Army who surveyed the border between the United States and Mexico in 1849. He returned in 1853-1856 to survey along the 35th parallel from Ft. Smith, Arkansas, to Los Angeles, California, in search of a southern railroad route to the Pacific.

Amiel died in Washhington, D.C., on May 7, 1863, of battle wounds received in the American Civil War's Battle of Chancellorsville. Arizona's first Army camp was established in Arizona on December 23, 1863, and moved to the present location of Fort Whipple the next year.

See the Whipple Blog for more information on Fort Whipple, also Amiel's page in the Whipple Website.
