Sabin Tavern and Commodore Abraham Whipple

Sabin Tavern (bottom half of this photo) was opposite Fenner's wharf in Providence, R.I. On the evening of June 9, 1772, Rhode Island patriots met there to make plans to burn the British revenue schooner Gaspee. Then, after midnight, Abraham Whipple (top half of the photo) led eight of the patriots' largest longboats to quietly approach, attack and burn the Gaspee. This was the first blow of the Revolution against England. See Abraham's page on the Whipple Website.
