First Day of Issue stamp cover signed by astronomer Fred Lawrence Whipple (1906-2004), chairman of Harvard's Department of Astronomy from 1949 to 1956. He was Director of the Smithsonian Institution Astrophysical Observatory beginning in 1955. Arizona's Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory bears his name. The stamp commemorates Caltech's Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, California.
