Might the "1804" at the bottom of the photo be in error? (After all, the world's first photograph wasn't taken until 1826 or 1827, using a technique known as heliography.) It's possible that the house was built in 1804, before George M. Whipple took up residence in the home? If so, it might have later become the home of George Manton Whipple (1830-1913), who was born and died in Salem, Massachusetts?
