Samuel's Headstone

Captain John's second son, Samuel, was the North Burial Ground's first interment in 1710/11, the proof of which is indicated on the marble slab in front of the headstone. Henry Whipple, in his 1873 book, tells its interesting story on page 55. His father and mother's headstones are to the northeast beyond the large tree in the background. Immediately to the right of the photograph are monuments to his brother Benjamin's grandson, Captain Jabez Whipple (and his five wives), and his sister Abigail's grandson, Governor Stephen Hopkins.
