Quaker Meetinghouse, Providence

Here the front entrance of the present Quaker meetinghouse in Providence is shown. It may be that when Captain John first came to Providence he was a member of that communion, or was at least a sympathizer with their cause. The John Whipples sold their property in Dorchester, Massachusetts less than one month after its government decreed that Quakers had to leave on pain of death. Some of his children and grandchildren were Quakers. About half of the colony's population were members of the Society of Friends during his lifetime.
