First Baptist Church

This is the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church in Providence; its predecessor being built about 50 years after Captain John's death. During his lifetime Baptists and Quakers (the colony's two dominant denominations) met in house churches. Records of this church start about the year 1755, therefore, there is no way to know if seventeenth century Whipple's were members. The first Whipple member listed was 1764. It is not certain as to which religion John belonged. The church founded by The Reverend Roger Williams split in 1652, with a minority of its membership being led by John Junior's eventual father-in-law, Thomas Olney. It seems logical that, if the Whipples were Baptist, they were members of that small splinter group.
