This is the Rhode Island seaport where, for period of about 50 years, the Joseph Whipple's sent many a ship out to sea. Captain Joseph Whipple Junior, at one time, owned at least four merchant vessels. To the immediate left of the photograph is where Deputy Governor Joseph III, in 1761, fell from his horse on the "Point Bridge" and was drown. He was the last of the politically prominent eighteenth century Newport Whipples.
